S2N 2026: SerNet on Proxmox VE for SMEs and the current state of Samba

At S2N Storage – Server – Network in Berlin on 3 and 4 November 2026, SerNet will give two talks. Thomas Schröder will show how small and medium-sized enterprises can build redundant virtualisation with Proxmox VE. Volker Lendecke, Samba developer at SerNet, will give an overview of the current state of Samba. S2N is the conference on storage, servers and networks organised by heise (iX) and dpunkt.verlag.

Proxmox VE in practice

In “Proxmox VE for small and medium-sized enterprises”, Thomas Schröder will show how SMEs with limited resources can build redundant virtualisation without expensive and complex licensing structures. He will present the architecture of single-node and cluster setups as well as options for storage, backup and networking. For companies currently using VMware, he will outline a migration path with as little downtime as possible. His experience comes first-hand: Thomas Schröder coordinates the migration of SerNet’s internal virtualisation.

What’s new in Samba

In “Samba 2026”, Volker Lendecke, member of the international Samba Team, will present the most important developments since S2N 2025. SMB over RDMA is now complete and enables significantly higher transfer rates. Integration with Ceph has made further progress. Samba has continued to strengthen the security of the Active Directory protocols and is on its way to replacing NTLM on standalone servers as well. Further topics include the integration of Entra ID and SMB and improved support for FUSE-based file systems.
